The Takefu Chrysanthemum Doll Festival, held each year from early October to early November at Takefu Central Park in Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture, is one of Japan's foremost chrysanthemum festivals. Begun in 1952, it has accumulated more than half a century of history and is known as one of the largest chrysanthemum doll exhibitions in Japan. As autumn deepens, chrysanthemum blossoms in every color fill the venue, brilliantly adorning the city of Echizen.

The stars of the festival are, without question, the "chrysanthemum dolls" (kiku-ningyo). Using living chrysanthemum flowers to form costumes, these dolls render historical figures and famous scenes from classic tales in three dimensions—a crystallization of the artisans' advanced skill. Living, blooming chrysanthemums are carefully inserted into a framework called a dogara to form the figure's garments. A theme is set each year, and scenes drawn from historical dramas and tales are vividly recreated through the flowers.

Alongside the dolls, the venue displays a wide variety of meticulously cultivated chrysanthemum cultivars, and competitive exhibitions are held in which prize blooms vie against one another. Visitors can enjoy the many faces of the chrysanthemum—from large single blooms to delicate kengai ("cascade") arrangements and bonsai-style cultivation.

Beyond the floral displays, the Takefu Chrysanthemum Doll Festival also offers revue shows and amusement park attractions, making it a family-friendly event cherished as a major local outing. Echizen City is also renowned for traditional crafts such as Echizen forged blades and Echizen washi paper. Set against this rich cultural backdrop, the festival continues to welcome large numbers of visitors as a defining autumn celebration of Fukui.
