What Is the Shimōsa Miyama Seven-Year Festival?

The Shimōsa Miyama Seven-Year Festival is a grand joint festival centered on Ninomiya Shrine in Miyama, Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture, held once every six years (once every seven years by the traditional count) and gathering the deities of nine neighboring shrines. The portable shrines of multiple shrines assemble at Miyama, and rites of the ubuya (birthing hut), in which each deity is likened to a father, mother, child, and so on, are performed. Known as a distinctive festival modeled on a family story, it is designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Chiba Prefecture.

History and Origins

The Shimōsa Miyama Seven-Year Festival is a festival of nearly 600 years' history, said to trace its origins to 1445 in the Muromachi period. Believed to derive from a legend concerning prayers for safe childbirth, it developed as a rite in which Ninomiya Shrine plays the father and Koyasu Shrine the mother, celebrating the safe birth of a child. Nine shrines situated across Funabashi, Chiba, Narashino, and Yachiyo each take on roles such as father, mother, child, midwife, uncle, and aunt, gathering as a family at Miyama—a structure with few parallels in the country. As a grand festival held once every six years, local people eagerly await the year of its staging.

Highlights

The greatest attraction is the magnificent sight of the portable shrines of all nine shrines converging one after another on Ninomiya Shrine in Miyama. Distinctive rites such as the "Ceremony of the Birthing Hut," in which the deities are likened to a family, are performed in the old style, while the fervor of the bearers from each district enlivens the festival. The shared display of portable shrines across a wide area speaks to the depth of the region's bonds.
