Overview
Fuji Rock Festival (γγΈγγγ―γγ§γΉγγ£γγ«) is Japan's largest outdoor rock festival, held annually over the three days of the final weekend of July (Friday to Sunday) at the Naeba Ski Resort in Yuzawa Town, Minamiuonuma District, Niigata Prefecture. Since its inaugural edition in 1997, the festival has accumulated nearly three decades of history, drawing approximately 120,000 attendees over its three days, including a substantial number of international visitors. It is also recognized internationally as "the world's cleanest music festival."
History
The first Fuji Rock was held in 1997 (Heisei 9) at the Fujiten Snow Resort in Shizuoka Prefecture, but a direct hit by a typhoon forced the cancellation of the second and third days, immediately turning it into a legendary event in Japanese music history. Since 1999, the festival has been held at its current home, the Naeba Ski Resort in Niigata Prefecture, continuing without interruption (with the 2020 edition held online due to the pandemic, and a reduced-scale edition in 2021). The festival is organized by Smash Corporation. Built on the principles of "coexistence with nature" and "environmental responsibility," its commitment to thorough waste sorting, reusable tableware, and forest-protection projects has earned high praise from international media, which have described it as "the cleanest rock festival in the world."
Highlights
The venue is set against the vast forest and mountain streams of the Naeba Ski Resort, encompassing approximately nine stages. The Green Stage and White Stage β the two main stages β host world-class rock bands and artists as nightly headliners. Past lineups have included the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead, Coldplay, Oasis, Bob Dylan, and the Foo Fighters. Japanese artists also feature prominently, with a lineup spanning rock, electronic, hip-hop, jazz, and many other genres. The festival grounds host approximately 200 food and drink stalls, on-site hot-spring baths, and campgrounds β establishing it as a true multi-day stay-and-experience festival.
