What Is the Sendai Tanabata Fireworks Festival?
The Sendai Tanabata Fireworks Festival is a fireworks display held each year on 5 August in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. It adorns the eve of the "Sendai Tanabata Festival" (6–8 August), known as one of Japan's three great Tanabata festivals—in effect a fireworks display announcing the opening of the Tanabata festival. Some 16,000 fireworks splendidly color the summer night sky of Sendai, the "City of Trees." Many people gather in summer kimono, and it is cherished as a summer tradition.
History and Origins
The Sendai Tanabata Fireworks Festival began in 1970. It was conceived as an event to enliven the "Sendai Tanabata Festival," which represents the summer of Sendai, and to celebrate its eve, and it has continued for more than half a century since. Together with the Sendai Tanabata Festival—a traditional event continuing since the time of Date Masamune—it has grown into a major event that colors the summer of Sendai, and today it captivates many people as one of the fireworks displays representative of summer in the Tōhoku region.
Highlights
The greatest attraction is the roughly 16,000 fireworks that fill the night sky of central Sendai. A variety of fireworks—star mines, large shells, and ingeniously designed set pieces—are launched one after another, captivating spectators. Because the venue is the area around Nishi Park near the city center, the urban scenery of fireworks against a backdrop of high-rises is also distinctive. With splendid staging that heightens anticipation for the Tanabata festival beginning the next day, it ardently enlivens the summer of the City of Trees. The atmosphere of the venue, bustling with people in summer kimono, is also a charm unique to a summer festival.
