Overview

The Nanao Port Festival is a summer festival held in Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture, centered around the Ohanai River Street and the Noto Shokusaishijo market. The origins of the Nanao Port Festival date back to 1940, when the first festival was held to commemorate the opening of Nanao Port and the growth of the city. The event was designed to create vibrancy in the port town and celebrate its maritime heritage. Although interrupted by World War II, the festival was revived during the post-war reconstruction period and has since become a staple of summer life for local residents.

In October 2004, following the establishment of a new municipal system in Nanao City, the festival's schedule was revised. The date was set to the day before and the two days before Marine Day, a national holiday observed on the third Monday of July, to more explicitly emphasize gratitude for the sea and the port. This change allowed the festival to be held on a consistent annual schedule based on the Marine Day holiday.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival was canceled in 2020 and 2021. In 2022, it resumed with a shortened one-day format on July 17, and the scale gradually returned to normal in subsequent years. Despite these interruptions, core events such as the General Dance parade and the Bay Side Music concert were preserved and continued to be passed down.

Visitors can tour the interior of the vessel, making it a popular attraction for families and military enthusiasts. This tour is made possible through cooperation with the JMSDF Ishikawa Regional Cooperation Headquarters, providing an educational opportunity to learn about the activities and equipment of the Self-Defense Forces. Free Yukata Dressing Service Free yukata dressing services are offered at the Nanao Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Forum Nanao. Participants need to bring their own yukata, obi, and necessary accessories, and professional staff will dress them. This service is a great help for citizens joining the General Dance and for tourists who wish to participate in the festival wearing yukata. The reception is open from 4:00 PM to 5:45 PM, and punctuality is required.

Access: By public transportation, it is about a 5-minute walk from JR Nanao Station to Ohanai River Street. By car, take the Noto Expressway to Nanao IC, then drive approximately 5 km via National Route 159, taking about 10 minutes. Traffic restrictions are in place on the day, so using temporary parking lots is recommended for those arriving by car.

Fees: Viewing from the streetside is free. There is no admission fee for the festival grounds, including the fireworks and General Dance. If paid reserved seating is available, prices vary each year, so refer to official announcements. The free yukata dressing service is also provided at no cost.

Parking: Several free temporary parking lots are set up within the city. Main lots include Nanao City Sodegae Parking Lot (in front of city hall), Ishikawa Prefecture Chuhoto General Office Parking Lot, Ishikawa Prefecture Noto Chubu Health and Welfare Center Parking Lot, Nanao City Cultural Hall Parking Lot, Nanao Kaiun Yusou Parking Lot, and Noto Wakaba Agricultural Cooperative Parking Lot.
