Overview

The International Horticultural Expo 2027 (GREEN×EXPO 2027) is an international horticultural exposition scheduled to be held from March 19 to September 26, 2027, on the former Kamiseya Communications Facility site spanning Asahi Ward and Seya Ward in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Recognized by the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) as an A1-class event (the highest rank), the expo carries the theme "Scenery of the Future for Happiness." It marks Japan's first international horticultural exposition in 37 years since the 1990 "Flower Expo" in Osaka.

History

The Kamiseya district that will serve as the venue was used as a United States military communications facility for many decades after World War II, with the 242-hectare expanse returned to Japan in 2015. Yokohama City pursued the hosting of an international horticultural exposition as a strategy for utilizing the returned land. The city secured AIPH approval in 2017 and recognition from the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) in 2020. After delays related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the official name "GREEN×EXPO 2027" was finalized in 2024, and preparations entered their main phase.

Highlights

The expo will feature cutting-edge outdoor displays integrating horticulture, agriculture, and environmental technologies, bringing together garden designs from countries worldwide, traditional Japanese horticultural culture, and next-generation agricultural technologies responding to the SDGs and carbon neutrality goals. Approximately 15 million visitors are expected during the run, and elaborate evening illuminations and drone shows are being planned to provide spectacular nighttime entertainment.

The venue occupies approximately 80 hectares of the former Kamiseya Communications Facility site straddling Asahi Ward and Seya Ward in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture. The nearest station is Seya Station on the Sōtetsu Line, with shuttle bus services and temporary rail access infrastructure being developed for the event. The exposition runs for 192 days from March 19 to September 26, 2027.

Yokohama City offers a wealth of established tourist attractions including the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse, Minato Mirai 21 district, and Yokohama Chinatown, allowing visitors to combine the expo with broader sightseeing tours. The neighboring Seya and Asahi wards preserve traditional satoyama countryside landscapes, with agricultural experience facilities and Shiki no Mori Park offering additional nature-focused attractions to complement the horticultural theme of the expo itself.
