Overview

The Hokkai Soran Matsuri is a summer festival held each year in the town of Yoichi, in the Yoichi District of Hokkaido. Yoichi is regarded as the birthplace of Soran Bushi, one of the most famous folk songs of Hokkaido, and the festival is held to celebrate and carry on that heritage. The main venue is Yoichi Port, where performances of the authentic Soran Bushi take center stage, accompanied by a fireworks display that lights up the summer night sky, drawing large crowds from the town and beyond. Although its name resembles the "YOSAKOI Soran Festival" held in Sapporo in June, the two are entirely different events. The Hokkai Soran Matsuri stands apart because it takes place in the true birthplace of Soran Bushi and conveys the song in its original form.

History and Origins

Soran Bushi originated as a work song sung along the Sea of Japan coast of Hokkaido, which once prospered through herring fishing. Migrant laborers called "yan-shu," hired for the demanding herring catch, sang this song (a net-hauling chant) as they pulled in the heavy nets. The distinctive call of "Soran, Soran" was born from the need to synchronize the rhythm of the grueling work and to encourage one another. Yoichi flourished through herring fishing from the Meiji into the Taisho era, and the coast still preserves "nishin goten," grand mansions built by the fishing magnates, vividly conveying the town's history intertwined with the herring trade. Against this backdrop of pride as the birthplace of Soran Bushi, the Hokkai Soran Matsuri has continued as a way to recall the prosperous days of the fishery and to pass the region's folk-song culture on to future generations. By 2026 the festival had reached its 58th edition, marking a long and established tradition.

Highlights

The greatest highlight is the performance of the authentic Soran Bushi by a local preservation society. In an age when arranged, modern versions of "Soran" are danced all over the country, here in its birthplace one can witness the original Soran Bushi handed down with powerful singing and traditional movements. The dance, said to imitate the motions of hauling herring nets, carries within it the memory of the labor of people who lived alongside the sea, combining raw power with rustic simplicity.

The other major highlight is the fireworks display that closes the festival, coloring the night sky over Yoichi Port. Launched against the backdrop of the sea, the fireworks create a scene unique to a fishing-port town, bringing the energy of the festival—heightened by song and dance—to a climax. Food stalls line the port venue, and families and visitors gather to enjoy the summer evening.

For access, the venue is about a 15-minute walk from Yoichi Station on the JR Hakodate Main Line. From the Sapporo area, it is common to drive via Otaru; Yoichi is relatively close to Otaru along National Route 5 and other roads. Traffic restrictions may be in place around the venue on the day of the festival, so using public transportation is convenient. Visitors are advised to check the latest dates, times, and traffic information through official announcements by the town of Yoichi or the Yoichi Tourism Association.

Around the Area

Along with herring fishing, Yoichi is known for fruit growing and whisky making. In the center of town stands the Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery, founded by Masataka Taketsuru, often called the father of Japanese whisky; its solid stone buildings and tour facilities with tastings make it a popular attraction. Along the coast remain relics of the herring fishery such as the former Yoichi Fukuhara Fishery and the nishin goten mansions, some designated as registered tangible cultural properties, evoking the prosperity of bygone days.

Yoichi is also a major fruit-producing area for apples, grapes, and more; in recent years grape growing for wine has thrived, and several wineries dot the area. Fruit picking can be enjoyed in autumn. A little farther afield lies Otaru, the tourist city famous for its canal and historic buildings, making it easy to combine the two in a single itinerary.
