Overview
The Saga International Balloon Fiesta is the largest hot air balloon competition in Asia, held annually in late October to early November in Saga City, Saga Prefecture. Set against the vast Kase River floodplain, the event attracts over 100 balloons from around the world and draws approximately 800,000 visitors over its five-day run, making it one of Saga's most iconic autumn attractions.
The sight of dozens of colorful balloons ascending into the misty dawn sky above the Saga Plain has earned international acclaim as one of the most visually stunning hot air balloon events in the world.
History and Origins
The festival traces its origins to 1978, when the first competition was held in Amagi City (now Asakura City) in neighboring Fukuoka Prefecture. In 1980, the event relocated to Saga City, taking advantage of the Kase River floodplain's ideal terrain and stable atmospheric conditions for ballooning.
In 1989, the festival hosted its first Hot Air Balloon World Championship, cementing its international status. Saga returned as the World Championship venue in 1997 and 2017, establishing the city as Asia's premier destination for competitive ballooning.
The Kase River venue offers the perfect combination of an open east-west-running plain and the gentle, predictable seasonal winds from the Ariake Sea — conditions that make it one of the most reliable balloon competition sites in the world.
Highlights
Morning Mass Ascension Around 7:00 AM, approximately 100 balloons launch simultaneously into the dawn sky. The sound of burners and the contrast of vivid balloon colors against the morning mist create an unforgettable spectacle, especially popular with photographers.
Balloon Fantasia A special program featuring novelty-shaped balloons resembling animals, characters, and buildings. A highlight for families with children.
La Montgolfière Nocturne On select evenings, tethered balloons ignite their burners in synchronized patterns set to music, transforming the night sky into a glowing, choreographed display.
Honda Grand Prix Balloon Competition The serious side of the event — professional pilots compete in target-based contests where balloons must drop markers as close as possible to designated points, offering spectators a clear sense of skill and precision.
